Reflect, Connect, Progress
The idea of creating a journey stick has been developed in many countries. It is a method used by Native Americans - a way of telling the story of their journey to others. It involves collecting and tying objects to a stick that help to recall and represent different experiences, feelings or part of the journey. |
During the project, children and adults will be encouraged to reflect on their own learning journeys. They will be creating their own versions of 'journey sticks' in a variety ways. Questions, thoughts, memories, feelings, connections and moments will be recorded on a regular basis.
Questions for Lynne and Andrew after watching the iMovie of their trip to New York in 2009.
- Who was the one playing in the snow? Lynne!
- What was the statue in the photographs? The Statue of Liberty.
- How long did you stay there for? 10 days with very good friends who live in Up-State New York in a place called Gilboa.
- Who was the first statue? The Statue of Liberty.
- How did you enjoy your trip? It was amazing! We loved seeing the cities and the rural areas near the mountains. We saw so many different animals...and skunks really do leave a bad smell!
- Is it weird out there? Are the schools different? It would seem strange some of the time because it can be different to us. The schools have some things that are the same and some things that are different - like the yellow school buses! Some children who are really young travel for 2 hours to get to school. None of the children live near enough to walk to their school in Gilboa.
- What was your favourite part of the trip? I absolutely loved the snow as we don't get the snow like that in Wales.
- Who was the dog? Iona - she is a labrador and is lovely.
- Were there sunny days? Yes - when we went in June it was SO hot. Hotter than we ever have it in Wales...even hotter than last week!
- How cold was it? In December it was -12 degrees centigrade on some of the days. Really cold.
- What was the flight like? It was long but I love to watch the films and have the food! I was excited (Lynne).
- Did you have to pay for food on the flight? No - it was included on this long flight.
- How long were you there? 10 days in June and 10 days in December.
- Were the people rude to you when you got off the plane? There were very serious but they weren't rude to us. Although, they didn't smile much which made Lynne a bit nervous and she got confused when they asked her to put her four fingers on the screen to take fingerprints.
- Did you go inside the Statue of Liberty...and the cafe in the crown? We went inside the Statue of Liberty, but didn't go the the cafe in the crown. I didn't realise there was one and now I want to go back!
- Where was the baseball statue? It was in a place called Cooperstown that is famous for baseball.

Partner Game - 1...2...3...
What did you think you did well and what did you find difficult?
- It was harder than I thought it would be!
- It was really difficult at the start - you really had to think hard about who says what after number 1 and 2.
- You think the next level up would be harder when you add the clap and the stamp, but it isn't.
- It was hard enough saying 1 2 3 and then you added a clap and a stamp!
- When we were on 1 2 3, I said 4 instead of 1!
- When I was with the first partner I was ok and then we said we'll get faster and then I said 4!
- It was easy with 1 2 3 and stamping, but not the clap!
- Every time when I kept on doing it I was doing clap and stamp at the same time!

Class 6 Check In (Verbal Responses) - Day 4
What have you learned from working in a team?
- It's easier than working by yourself. (Most people gave this response.)
- More ideas, faster working!
- Sometimes, you have an idea but you're not sure how to make it work and your team can help you.
- We've been helping each other...and I haven't got in a mood!
- It's hard because if you if have different ideas, you start arguing.
- You have to be patient and sit back and not be bossy.
- It can be harder because you might want your idea to be done and no one else does.
- If one person has got easy work and two people have got hard work, the person with the easy work can do it and help the other two.
- I mustn't distract people. I need to stay focused.
